Bass virtuoso Tony Grey is coming to Asheville Music School. Tony Grey is a multi-instrumentalist, master bassist, composer, producer, published author and award-winning music educator; he studied at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2001, receiving the prestigious ‘Outstanding Performer’ award. Tony is known for his 6-string electric bass technique, his blend of jazz/world-fusion compositions, and his groundbreaking music education curriculum and teaching Philosophy.

Tony has collaborated and performed with a long list of greats- John McLaughlin, Hiromi, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gavin DeGraw, Hotei Tomoyasu, Dennis Chambers, Bill Evans, Zakir Hussain, Brian Blade, Mike Stern, Karsh Kale, Wayne Krantz, Branford Marsalis, and many more.

About the Workshop:

Tony encourages students to bring their instruments, without amps or anything extra. The classes are structured in a very open format, beginning with a live-looping improvisation to get the students familiar with his sound and technique. It also allows everyones minds to settle into a creative and musical space. Common ground, so to speak. This then opens the floor for questions about his technique/musical concepts/gear/etc. When he has a shy audience, he will encourage students to open up by sharing his own story and how he became a musician, which is very inspiring and we’ve found that MANY students can relate to his experience on one level or another.

He guides the workshop to focus around his personal teaching Philosophy, which is based in creative learning. For example: If you’re learning a scale, instead of just learning it — learn how to make melodies with it, how to create bass lines with it, how to compose with it, how to improvise with it, and most importantly learn how to hear and feel it all over your instrument so that the only thing holding you back is the limitation of your own imagination. He’ll apply this to various topics, such as technique, bass line building, soloing concepts, composition, learning to play jazz standards, and navigating around the instrument freely. The intention behind his approach is to provide students with a conceptual blueprint that can be applied, regardless of what level they are at.

We welcome all level players as well as multi-instrumentalists. Tony has found that this approach works really well, and there’s never been a class that has been taught in the same way. It’s very free flowing.

About the Galactic Duo performance:

This project features the original compositions and melodic playing of bass virtuoso, Tony Grey who has created a multi-dimensional universe of cosmic sound, combining his signature live looping, melodic improvisations with the rhythmic fusion of layered electronica tracks, collectively propelled through space and time by the intuitive groove and high energy brilliance of drummer, Ian Maciak. Be prepared to experience the flawless performance of this ethereal, drum and bass, jazz-fusion masterpiece!
