Private Music Lessons

- Our experienced staff will match you with an appropriate teacher. If you have a specific teacher in mind, let us know on the inquiry form.
- One of our teachers will contact you asap to discuss lessons. Keep an eye on your email and phone.
- After your first lesson, should you decide to continue, we will ask you to become a member of Asheville Music School, which includes annual membership dues of just $65.

Alexander Technique Workshop
Sunday April 21

For all musicians who are wanting to feel more comfortable and supported while playing their instrument. Discover greater ease, fluidity and expressivity. Participants are encouraged but not required to bring their instruments. This workshop is a safe space to share questions, experiences and to explore together how to cultivate a sense of wellbeing while refining your artistry. All levels and abilities are welcome!
Registration is limited to 10 participants, so please register so we don’t get overbooked! Walk-ins are accepted if there is space.

New Orleans Brass Band Workshop
April 13, 2024

Taught by: Nick Garrison
It’s a party in the streets! Follow that beat and move your feet to the Brass Band sounds of New Orleans. Bring out your horns, drums, shakers and noise makers to play in this workshop for all ages and skill levels! We’ll be learning traditional parade and second-line tunes from the Crescent City, emphasizing fun and building community together. Students will learn simple melodies, bass lines, and collective improvisation, and have a chance to share their voice of this musical language in a live setting.
Instruments this class is geared towards include trumpet, trombone, saxophones, clarinet, tuba, bass, drum set, and percussion. Some experience on the instrument is required as far as the students’ understanding of notes/fingerings on their instrument.

Two Adult Ukulele Classes
We are pleased to announce 2 more adult ukulele classes this Spring 2024! One of them will be a Level 2 class, for those with some experience, and 1 class will be for absolute beginners. See details below, and links to register. All you need is a ukulele. Classes taught by Madelyn Ilana. Happy strumming!
Adult Ukulele Class (101)
8-week series
Taught by: Madelyn Ilana
In this ukulele workshop, participants will have the opportunity to begin learning introductory chords and strumming patterns. We will begin to practice changing between chords, and even singing while playing if you feel ready! We will focus on rhythm as well as melody. Students will have the opportunity to choose songs that we will play together as a group. You can expect to build your musical repertoire in this jam style class.
Adult Ukulele Class (202)
8-week series
Taught by: Madelyn Ilana
Level 2 ukulele is for students who have experience on the ukulele or another string-family instrument. Students should demonstrate basic proficiency in changing between chords, and playing basic strumming patterns to be ready for Level 2. In this class, we will discuss music theory, and begin learning some slightly more advanced songs. Participants will have the opportunity to practice strumming, finger picking, changing chords, and singing while playing. We will focus on rhythm as well as melody. Students will have the opportunity to choose songs that we will play together as a group. You can expect to build your musical repertoire in this jam style class. This class will culminate in a performance for friends and family (performance date tbd).
Adult Clawhammer Banjo Group Class
Taught by: Jason McCoy
4-week group class series @ Asheville Music School
Learn the basics of clawhammer banjo. Novice and total beginners of banjo welcome; all you need is your instrument! Course materials and videos provided.
PAST CLASSES:
Adult Old-Time Jam 101
8-week group class series @ Asheville Music School
Learn the basics of Folk/Old-Time Jam in the style you might see at Jack of the Wood, Warren Wilson, or the Swannanoa Gathering. All you need is some experience and your instrument!
Class will emphasize:
- building repertoire of traditional songs and tunes
- learning the roll of folk instruments in context of the ensemble
- folk style “jam” techniques and basic improvisation to blend well with the group based on individual skill level
Novice to intermediate players of guitar, banjo, and fiddle welcome. This class is not suitable for total beginners.
