Classes & Workshops

Asheville Music School offers private lessons, group classes, workshops, summer camps, and student bands

Private Music Lessons

AMS teachers offer private lessons to students of all ages and skill levels (adults included) on a wide range of instruments. Online and in-person lessons are available. Here’s how to get started:
  1. Fill out the New Student Inquiry form and let us know what you’re interested in.
  2. Our experienced staff will match you with an appropriate teacher. If you have a specific teacher in mind, let us know on the inquiry form.
  3. One of our teachers will contact you asap to discuss lessons. Keep an eye on your email and phone.
  4. After your first lesson, should you decide to continue, we will ask you to become a member of Asheville Music School, which includes annual membership dues of just $65.

Group Classes 2026


Adult Ukulele Level 2, for Experienced Players

Taught by: Madelyn Ilana
Fridays, April 17 – May 29
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

This class is designed for ukulele players who already have a basic foundation on the instrument and are ready to continue building confidence, technique, and musicality. Over the course of 7 weeks, we’ll deepen our skills through more varied strumming patterns, introductory fingerpicking, chord transitions, and musical phrasing, while learning new songs together in a supportive group setting.

Students will have opportunities to expand their repertoire, strengthen timing and rhythm, and develop a clearer understanding of how chords, melody, and song structure work on the ukulele. The class emphasizes practical playing, listening, and ensemble skills, with space for questions and individual growth.

Whether you’re looking to solidify your fundamentals, gain momentum in your playing, or simply enjoy making music with others, this class offers a relaxed and encouraging environment to help you progress.

Prerequisite:

Students should be comfortable with basic chords, simple strumming, and tuning their instrument.

Adult Guitar Class – all skill levels

This welcoming group class is designed for adult learners of all levels—whether you’re picking up the guitar for the first time or returning to it after some time away. Together, we’ll explore the fundamentals of playing in a relaxed and supportive environment.

You’ll learn essential skills like basic chords, strumming patterns, rhythm, and simple song structures, while building confidence in your playing. We’ll work with accessible, enjoyable songs and focus on developing musicality, coordination, and ease in the hands and body.

This class is not just about learning songs—it’s about learning how to play, so you can continue growing on your own.

No prior experience is necessary—just bring your guitar and a willingness to learn.

Sound Lab Production Workshop at AMS

Taught by: Josh Blake
Saturday March 21, 2026

This hands-on workshop covers the fundamentals of music production, focusing on basic recording and mixing techniques. Participants will learn essential signal flow, mic placement, DAW workflow, and simple mixing approaches to help bring their recordings to life. We’ll focus on practical techniques, creative decision-making, and simple tools that help turn raw ideas into polished tracks.

No prior experience necessary – all skill levels welcome.

Adult Ukulele Level 2, for Experienced Players

Fridays, Jan 9 – March 20 (no class Jan. 23, 30, and March 13)

This class is designed for ukulele players who already have a basic understanding of the instrument and are ready to take their skills to the next level. Over the course of 8 weeks, we will explore more advanced techniques, including complex strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and chord progressions. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn new songs across a variety of genres and develop a deeper understanding of music theory as it applies to the ukulele.

Whether you’re looking to expand your repertoire, refine your technique, or simply enjoy playing with others, this class will provide a supportive and engaging environment to help you grow as a musician.

Prerequisite: Previous experience with basic chords, strumming, and tuning.

PAST CLASSES

Adult Rock & Blues “Summer Camp”

Taught by: Dillon Young
July 21 – July 25, 2025

Play in a band this summer! Guitar, drums, bass, keys, vocals, and more are all welcome to enroll. Minimum 1-2 months experience on your instrument.

This camp will culminate with a live performance on Friday July 25.

Adult Old-Time Jam

June 6 – July 25, 2024
Thursdays, 7:30pm – 8:30pm
$175
Taught by: Jason McCoy

7-week group class series @ Asheville Music School

Learn the basics of Folk/Old-Time Jam, in the style you might see at Jack of the Wood, Warren Wilson, or the Swannanoa Gathering. You’ll just need to know the basics of how to play your instrument (and you’ll need your instrument too).

Class will emphasize:

  • building repertoire of traditional songs and tunes
  • learning the roll of folk instruments in context of the ensemble
  • folk style “jam” techniques and basic improvisation to blend well with the group based on individual skill level

Novice to intermediate players welcome. This class is not suitable for total beginners.

Student Bands

The AMS Sound Education Outreach program includes student rock bands, pop bands, and a fiddle group. Bands are starting to rehearse again, and are looking for new members. Learn more about our outreach bands here, and contact Executive Director Ryan Reardon for more info.
