Bio

Bob Strain holds a Bachelor of Arts in music from Shepherd University, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from Shenandoah Conservatory, where he was on the piano faculty for eight years. He has performed extensively in the Washington, DC region, in solo and collaborative recitals as well as in long-term solo engagements at venues such as the Willard Intercontinental Hotel, the Gaylord National Hotel at National Harbor, MD, and the Bavarian Inn of Shepherdstown, WV. He also has worked at various times in DC-region big bands and jazz trios. Bob has served as pianist and music director for productions at the Contemporary American Theater Festival. Bob also teaches piano at Warren Wilson College.

Lessons With Bob

“As a teacher, my goal is to guide the student beyond basic piano technique and repertoire to an understanding of music theory, aural skills, and historic context – to develop musicality as well as proficiency. Each lesson will incorporate some aspect of each of these interrelated skills and will cultivate careful listening to what is being played. As students advance, I encourage them to explore a range of musical situations, such as ensembles, accompanying, and improvisation.”

Testimonials

“Bob has been teaching both of our boys (7 yr old and 10 yr old) for the past year. We could not be happier! His demeanor and teaching approach have proven to be very effective for both children, despite their distinct differences in learning styles and personalities. Not only are our boys learning faster than we ever imagined, but they are just as enthusiastic today as when they first started.  Bob Strain is not only an incredible talent, but he is an outstanding teacher and a very kind person. Thank you for having him on your team.”
