BIO
Mathias Farley is a recent graduate of the jazz and contemporary music program at UNC Asheville. As a fresh face in the Asheville music scene, Mathias has toured with Empire Strikes Brass, played in concert series’s with the Blue Ridge Orchestra, and has experience freelancing in the local jazz scene. While at UNC Asheville, he studied with many of the best jazz musicians that western NC has to offer, such as Nick Garrison, Jacob Rodriguez, Justin Ray, Dr. Brian Felix, and Dr. Bill Bares.
Mathias started his musical journey while in the E.E. Waddell Japanese Language Immersion Program in Charlotte NC, initially playing the taiko drums in the after school taiko club. This inspired him to pursue music in sixth grade band, where he started on trombone and never looked back. After district, regional, and statewide accolades, Mathias earned the Louis Armstrong award for jazz from South Mecklenburg high school before graduating in the year 2020.
Mathias recently began his teaching journey with Music & Arts in July of 2024. There, Mathias taught a range of students from the very beginning levels of playing the instrument, to late high school students looking to make competitive pushes to get into regional and statewide bands. He aspires to continue teaching and to progress as an educator, as well continuing to be a student of music for the rest of his career.
Lessons With Mathias
My approach to playing the trombone is lead by a sense of gratitude. Throughout practice, this gratitude turns into joy, and consistency with gratitude and joy comes satisfaction. I believe that practice should be fun, relaxed, and approachable. Everything that we play comes from either fundamentals or an extension of fundamentals. Because of this, I put a heavy emphasis on proper fundamentals and technique in lessons. I also believe that both of those things can be worked on by playing almost any style of music on the trombone, which is supported by making genuine connections with students and encouraging them to explore their own musical interests in lessons with me. I love playing the trombone and can’t wait to share my passion for music with my students! Through the respect of yourself, your instrument, and the art, we can do great things together.
