BIO

Hailing originally from Peru bilingual singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Mar landed in Appalachia 29 yrs ago to pursue his passion for music. He honed his craft during his years at Mars Hill University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music (vocal concentration),and later a Master’s in Music Therapy at Florida State University. Soon after he landed in Miami, FL where his music performance career took off, and he opened his first teaching studio. Mar’s years in South Florida granted him two awards, a few albums, many shows, and a whole bunch of happy talented students!

In the Fall of 2018, Mar decided to relocate back to the mountains of Western North Carolina, and immediately joined the AMS team. With more than 15 years of experience teaching music to children and adults through customized individual lessons, Mar incorporates very unique music education techniques derived from his Music Therapy expertise and combined with his craft as a performing artist.

Currently, when Mar isn’t teaching, you can catch him performing in town with one of his three bands.

LESSONS WITH MAR

Mar’s lessons are fun and dynamic. He taps into the rhythm and musical spark of his students. Mar is an eclectic, dedicated, and hands-on teacher, who is thorough explaining concepts, and successful at creating the space and trust for each student. He specializes in teaching the little ones and enjoys working with kids all ages; also awakening the child in every adult. Mar believes music connects us with the most true expression of our selves.

During lessons, Mar teaches the foundations of sight-reading, aural skills, and music theory as well as the performance skills for vocals or instrument of choice. He will then customize the lesson according to the student’s interest in style, goals and/or needs. Learning to make music rather than just learning the technical aspects of singing or playing an instrument is a fundamental part of Mar’s lessons.
