At the age of 11, Florida-native Mandy Guilfoyle discovered her love for the cello and quickly rose to the top, earning awards and scholarships along the way. Summers were spent at intensive music festivals in Florida, North Carolina, and Boston. At the age of 17, Mandy was presented the Ruth Eckerd Hall Young Artist Competition Scholarship by flautist Sir James Galway. At the age of 19, Mandy held her first professional recital with the Artist Series of Sarasota, in Sarasota, Florida to glowing reviews.
An avid chamber musician, Mandy has performed both with string quartets and as orchestra principal cellist throughout the United States and Europe, including tours in Italy, Austria, and France. She has also worked with members of the Silk Road Ensemble at the Global Musician Workshop in its inaugural and second years, where she learned world music styles and techniques and helped build a bridge between cultures through musical collaboration.
Mandy received her B.A. in Music with a focus on cello performance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, where she studied with world-renowned cellist Andres Diaz. During her time in college, she discovered her passion for music education, and gained experience in teaching many instruments, including cello, violin, viola, piano, and ukulele. She then went on to finish her M.M. in Music Education from Southern Methodist University, where she was one of the top of her class and a member of the Alpha Chi Honors Society. Mandy has experience teaching all ages of students and in many different settings, including private, semi-private, group, and classroom teaching.
After completing her master’s degree, Mandy Guilfoyle moved to Asheville, NC in the fall of 2018 to take over the position of Program Director at the Asheville Music School. She lives in Asheville with her music-teacher husband, Chris, and her Boston Terrier, Darby. Feel free to check out her website, www.mandygraceguilfoyle.com.
Lessons With Mandy
I make sure to cater my curricula to each individual student, as no two people are exactly the same. I will take the time to get to know the student to assess the appropriate educational method to use. Examples of methods that I use include Little Mozarts and Wunderkeys for early childhood piano, Essential Elements for Strings for beginning strings combined with supplemental material, and etude and scale books such as Schroeder, Popper, and Galamian for intermediate to advanced/professional cello lessons.
No matter the age or instrument, I build all of my teacher-student relationships on a basis of trust. In order for students to truly feel comfortable expressing themselves musically while making mistakes in the learning process, they must feel comfortable with their teacher. I make sure that all my students know that their efforts are lauded, and that they are all creative and wonderful people. It is an important facet of my educational philosophy.
Lessons with me are fun and rewarding, often with lessons ending in a fit of giggles! I use games, interesting and relative pieces, and the students own creative ideas to supplement all of my lessons. I can’t wait to get to know you and your child!
