NOTE: Ben’s lessons are held offsite, and by appointment only.
Trumpet/keyboard player, synthesist, music technologist, and sonic scientist Ben Hovey blends his artistry as an accomplished traditional musician with a deep knowledge of music technology, into a truly rare talent. He can help traditional artists sculpt an artistic vision into a polished soundscape as well as help them learn the current tools available to them. He will help the student harness the power of modern music technology, from the latest iPad app or virtual instrument to cutting edge performance/recording techniques in Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase, or Pro Tools. At the core of Ben’s teaching is the harmonization of musicality and technology, so the student will also learn theory, orchestration, and improvisation. Ben teaches traditional jazz piano and jazz/classical trumpet lessons in addition to, or along with the music technology curriculum.
His intense passion for life and his craft is evident in his diverse musical background. Classically trained, Ben had the honor of winning his youth symphony concerto competition and performing the Artunian Trumpet Concerto. He then went on to receive a full jazz scholarship and Lewis Award (reserved for 1 freshman music student each year) at the University of Kentucky. This was the foundation for his later musical adventures. Fusing electronics with soul, dub, jazz, hip-hop, and world music has taken him from Ultra Music Festival in Miami, to Earthdance in San Francisco, to Burning Man and beyond. Ben has performed and/or recorded with Spam Allstars, George Clinton, Steel Pulse, Digital Underground, Bassnectar, Morris Day and The Time, Adam Deitch, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Galactic, Stephen, Kymani, and Damian Marley, Karl Denson, Michael Winslow, The Legendary JC’s, Yo Momma’s Big Fat Booty Band, Josh Phillips Folk Festival, Agent 23 Skidoo, GFE, Afromotive, Telepath, Pedro Alfonso, Bob Rosa, Suenalo, Kevens, Ill Subliminal, Lil Panda, and many more.
